Every Person Is A Story
It has been said that every person is different. From your looks and your clothes, how you do your hair and tie your shoes, to your life experiences and upbringing, no one on Earth has quite the same story. This blog was created to honor the individuals that attend Nevada State College at Henderson, and let their stories be heard.

I am currently interning at a Methadone clinic (New Beginnings Counseling Centers)here in the valley due to the relationships that I have created while attending classes at NSC. Last semester in Dr. Yao's field placement class, I did an internship for the semester at Montevista hospital. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do with my career, but I knew I was interested in pursuing some sort of counseling/psychology, hence my degree choice in psychology. However, through my placement at Montevista, I met my now supervisor Bobby Owens, MA. LADC and am currently working on my Certified in Alcohol and Drug Counseling. I am also pursing a minor in addiction counseling and will be completed with that and my bachelors in May. Nonetheless, had I not been at Nevada State where Dr. Yao was able to give me the one on one feed back, and the attention I needed to discover what I was truly passionate about, I do not believe I would be where I am today!
ReplyDeletePrior to attending NSC, I was going to CSN where I was just taking classes because I wasn't quite sure what else to do. However, at NSC the professors gave me guidance, support, encouragement and insight into myself in more ways than one! Finally, I felt like someone saw me for me! I was no longer going through the motions of my education, I was discovering myself and what I wanted from my life. I felt and do feel that professors at NSC care and really want to assist students to reaching their ultimate potential. I have been pushed, prompted and cheered all the way to the finish line thanks to these outstanding professors at NSC.
One final note prior to closing this letter is that there is a real community at NSC. I did go to UNLV intially because I am born and raised in Las Vegas. Frankly, if you're a Las Vegan, you go to UNLV. However, when I went there, I felt out of place... It was intimidating, frustrating, unfriendly and overwhelming all in one. Nevertheless, my experience with NSC was the polar opposite. I met friends almost immediately and I never felt out of place.
I think NSC deserves a chance and I completely understand the current financial situation of Nevada. However, there is a sense of pride that taking away a school that has meant so much to so many of us will ulimately do... I hope that you and those in control will reconsider that NSC is a beautiful place for many of us who want a better life. We have a family here! For me, since I am graduating in May, I feel a sort of sadness for those who may never get a chance to have the wonderful professors I have had here...
